Getting around the city
The Underground (the Tube) and the red buses take you everywhere. Don't buy paper tickets: pay with a contactless bank card or your phone, and the system caps your daily spending by itself. A bus ride costs about £1.75 whatever the distance and is the cheapest way to see the city.

- Oxford or CambridgeThe university cities, each about an hour by train.
- BrightonThe seaside city in the south, an hour by train.
What it costs
A coffee costs about £3.50 and a simple meal £12-18. Tube and bus journeys in zones 1-2 are capped at about £9 a day if you pay by contactless card.
When to go
May to September has the longest days and the mildest weather. December is lovely for the Christmas lights.
Tips
- Albanian citizens need a visa for the United Kingdom: apply in good time, before you buy your ticket.
- Pay for transport with a contactless bank card: it works out cheaper than paper tickets.
- The big museums (British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum, Tate Modern) are free, but at weekends it's worth booking a time slot online.
Frequently asked questions
Which London airport is best?
Heathrow is the closest and is linked by the Tube and the Elizabeth line. Luton and Stansted usually have cheaper tickets from Tirana, but allow 45-60 minutes and £15-20 to reach the centre.
How much money do you need per day in London?
Excluding the flight and accommodation, plan on £60-90 a day. The free museums bring the cost down a lot, while paid attractions (Tower of London, London Eye) cost £30-35 each.
What documents do I need?
The United Kingdom is not in the Schengen area. Albanian citizens need a visitor visa (Standard Visitor visa), which you apply for online and which requires an appointment to give your biometric data. Apply several weeks ahead and don't buy your ticket until you have the visa.
When are tickets cheapest?
Usually from November to March, outside holidays and long weekends, and for midweek departures. The prices on this page are checked every 3 hours, and the best deals are posted on our Telegram channel.
