  1. Ancient Rome: the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill on one ticket. In the afternoon, the Capitoline Hill and Piazza Venezia, then dinner in the Monti neighbourhood.

  • TrastevereCobbled lanes, trattorias and nightlife. More authentic, but a little further from the metro.
  • Monti and TerminiMonti is a pleasant neighbourhood near the Colosseum. The area around Termini station is the cheapest and the most practical for the airports.
  • PratiA quiet residential neighbourhood near the Vatican, on the metro and with reasonably priced restaurants.

What to eat

Getting around the city

The historic centre is walkable and the metro doesn't go into it, so be ready to walk a lot. The metro (lines A and B) serves the Vatican, the Colosseum and Termini; the ticket is valid for 100 minutes on buses and trams too. You can also pay with a contactless bank card.

  • Ostia AnticaThe ancient port of Rome, preserved like a smaller Pompeii, 30 minutes by train.
  • FlorenceOnly 1.5 hours by high-speed train, doable as a day trip.

What it costs

An espresso at the bar costs about €1.20, a plate of pasta €10-14, and a ticket for the metro and buses about €1.50-2.

When to go

Spring and autumn are ideal. July and August are very hot, with long queues.

Tips

  • Book your tickets for the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums online to avoid the queues.
  • The water from the public drinking fountains (nasoni) is safe to drink: carry a bottle with you.
  • Many state museums, the Colosseum among them, have free entry on the first Sunday of every month.

Frequently asked questions

Fiumicino or Ciampino?

Fiumicino is the main airport and has direct trains. Ciampino is smaller and closer, but is only linked by bus. If the flights cost about the same, Fiumicino is the more convenient choice.

How much money do you need per day in Rome?

Excluding the flight and accommodation, €50-80 a day is enough for food, transport and one paid attraction. The Colosseum costs about €18 and the Vatican Museums about €20.

What documents do I need?

Italy is in the Schengen area. Albanian citizens with a biometric passport enter without a visa, for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your return date. Biometric data is recorded at the border (the EES system), and the ETIAS online authorisation is expected to become mandatory: check before you leave whether it has come into force.
