A 3-day itinerary

  1. Piazza San Marco, the Basilica and the Doge's Palace in the morning. In the afternoon, the Rialto Bridge and a vaporetto ride along the Grand Canal (line 1).
  2. The islands: Murano for glass and Burano for the colourful houses. Come back for sunset on the Zattere promenade.
  3. Venice without a map: Cannaregio, the Ghetto and the Dorsoduro district with Santa Maria della Salute. Art lovers visit the Gallerie dell'Accademia.

Where to stay

  • San MarcoThe heart of the city, with the highest prices and the biggest crowds.
  • CannaregioA quieter and cheaper residential district, close to the railway station.
  • MestreThe mainland part of the city: hotels cost far less and the train or bus gets you to Venice in 10-15 minutes.

What to eat

  • CicchettiSmall snacks eaten standing up in bars called bàcari, with a glass of wine.
  • Sarde in saorSardines marinated with onion, vinegar and raisins.
  • Risotto al nero di seppiaBlack risotto with cuttlefish ink.
  • SpritzThe aperitif was born in this region: try it with Aperol or with Select, the Venetian version.

Getting around the city

You get around the city only on foot or by vaporetto, the water buses. A single ticket is expensive, so the 24- or 48-hour ticket works out better if you're also going to the islands. Gondolas have an official fare, about €90 for 30 minutes.

Day trips from Venice

  • VeronaAbout 1 hour and 10 minutes by train.
  • PaduaThe Scrovegni Chapel with Giotto's frescoes, 30 minutes by train.
  • The DolomitesCortina d'Ampezzo can be reached in about 2 hours by bus, for a day in the mountains.

What it costs

A coffee away from San Marco costs about €1.50. A single vaporetto ticket costs about €9.50, so the day ticket (about €25) is worth it.

When to go

April to June and September to October. In November and December there can be “acqua alta”, high water in the squares.

Tips

  • On some dates in spring and summer day visitors pay an entry fee online: check the calendar before you travel.
  • Eat away from San Marco: in the Cannaregio and Castello districts prices are much lower.
  • Don't sit on the steps of the bridges and don't eat sitting on the ground in the squares: the fines for tourists are steep.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth staying in Mestre?

Yes, if you want to save money: hotels often cost half as much and the train and bus connections are frequent. The only thing you miss is the quiet evenings in Venice, once the day visitors have left.

How much money do you need per day in Venice?

Excluding the flight and accommodation, plan on €60-90 a day. Vaporetto rides and restaurants near San Marco quickly push up the bill; with cicchetti and getting around on foot you spend far less.

What documents do I need?

Italy is in the Schengen area. Albanian citizens with a biometric passport enter without a visa, for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your return date. Biometric data is recorded at the border (the EES system), and the ETIAS online authorisation is expected to become mandatory: check before you leave whether it has come into force.

When are tickets cheapest?

Usually from November to March, outside holidays and long weekends, and for midweek departures. The prices on this page are checked every 3 hours, and the best deals are posted on our Telegram channel.
